About the Programs > Coaching Certificate Programs

Professionals seeking to use best practices in coaching others understand the essential role of accurate and comprehensive assessment of behavior. Depending on the focus of the coaching relationship, the selection of the assessment tools will vary.

We support the most researched and scientifically sound instruments which access behavior for developmental purposes. The goal of our Coaching Certificate Programs is to introduce best practices in the use of assessment in coaching.

In our training programs, we integrate cases for illustration and we explore key issues in development. Our Coaching Certificate Program takes you a step deeper into coaching in each of the following arenas:

Leadership Coaching

MBTI®, CPI 260™, and VOICES® are the tools we strongly recommend that you use in Leadership Coaching. Each tool provides unique data points to aid you in helping the leader you are coaching understand the depth and complexity of behavior and the targeted behaviors that will make a difference in performance and work-life satisfaction. The MBTI® Masterclass is an essential course because the third day of the workshop is intensely related to development and coaching activities.

EQ Coaching

BarOn EQ-i®, MBTI®, and EQ 360™ are the tools we include in our EQ Coaching Certificate Program. The BarOn model allows you to focus on the proven behaviors that affect performance, and with the MBTI® framework, you have a constructive model for enriching emotional intelligence.

Type Development Coaching

MBTI®, Type 360®, and FIRO-B® are the tools included in our Type Development Coaching Certificate Program. The MBTI® Masterclass is essential due to the focus on development and coaching. The use of Type 360® provides the essential leadership-type linkages, and the FIRO-B® tool yields significant information on interpersonal needs as linked to the MBTI® tool.

Requirements for Each Coaching Certificate Program

Each of the tools required for our Coaching Certificate Programs has web modules that you will review before attending the workshop. The modules include the Theory, History, Interpretation and Psychometrics of the tool.

Each Coaching Certificate Program requires completion of the MBTI® Masterclass because of its thoroughness in addressing leadership development and type effectiveness.

Each Coaching Certificate Program requires completion of the Online Coaching Course. This course has three modules:

Module One: Coaching: A Framework

The purpose of this module is to provide the coach with an orientation to a coaching framework related to the variables that have been shown to be most essential in a coaching relationship.

You should see this as an introduction to the key aspects of coaching that require deeper exploration and enrichment. Our overall goal is to introduce you to capstone topics and issues and to encourage you to further your competence through training and supervised practice.

This is one aspect of a larger learning journey to being an effective coach. Also, we are aware of our own biases in coaching that are grounded in leadership development and individual effectiveness. In an effort to be as intellectually honest with you as possible, our assumptions (which we will share a number of times) are:

  • Coaching effectiveness is tied to the coach's development. If you are not learning and growing as a coach and professional, you are going to limit the range of effectiveness you have as a coach.
  • Self-awareness leads to understanding how we behave, how our behavior affects others, and what we might learn to do in the future.

Behavior is influenced by the situation, learning, dispositions, and developmental readiness. If, as coaches, we are not attending to these influences on ourselves and on our coachees, we are likely to miss many opportunities to enrich our coaching and our lives.

Module Two: Coaching - Processes and Procedures

One example of a coaching process/procedure is contracting.

Coaches have an explicit and a psychological contract with coachees. The explicit contract should outline the following:

  • Nature of the coaching relationship
  • Number of anticipated sessions
  • Types of assessments to be used
  • Statement of confidentiality and data protection
  • Limits of the coaching relationship
  • Nature of communication between coach and coachee related to appointments and follow-up conversations
  • Data-sharing and hold-harmless agreements (if needed)

Module Three: Coaching Best Practices

This module covers three broad categories of best practice as a coach. First, there are problematic situations for which a coach needs to prepare. While coaches are guided by laws and policies of organizations, there are various universal standards that apply. Using cases that coaches are likely to confront, we can build capacity for responding. With each case, you will be asked to consider the nature of the situation, probable challenges, and various responses.

A second set of best practices involve strategies and suggestions to address special tasks or stages in coaching. These topics are driven by research findings related to the role of feedback, assessment strategies, and techniques.

Finally, we include some tips for the specific kind of coaching in which you are engaged, but you are invited to review them all. You will find materials on Leadership Coaching, Emotional Intelligence Coaching, and Type Development Coaching.
